‘Sorry to call you in early evenin’, Bill. It’s about two matters that I need to bring you up to speed with. I’ll be as quick as I can as yer probably wantin’ to get back before nightfall.’

‘Don’t worry, I’ll probably stay over. What’s botherin’ you, Ervine?’

‘The first one concerns some potential intimidation of voters at Faux-Port.’

‘We’re not doin’ that, are we? I don’t want Russen intimidating voters. That’ll be the end of any chance of winning.’

‘No, no, I agree. I suspect it’s the Cove. But if it is goin’ on, and hopefully it is, it could be to our advantage.’ William Peters gave Ervine a strange look. ‘Well, if it can be proved that there is intimidation goin’ on and we happened to lose the election because of it, the courts would undoubtedly declare the result of the election null and void.’

‘That’s good thinking, Ervine,’ William said. ‘And how would you prove it?’

‘I was gonna ask Floyd Greenburn to investigate. A job right up his street. I’ve made arrangements to meet him mid mornin’, tomorrow in my office.’

‘Good,’ William said. ‘And what’s the other issue?’ Ervine explained about the missing file. The whole chest problem was becoming messier and messier, but Ervine was not surprised. It was typical of most of his dealings with William Peters.

‘So, whoever put the chest back wanted that file, by the looks of things,’ William said thoughtfully. ‘Our main suspect for retrieving the chest was Floyd Greenburn. That’s what your predecessor asked him to do, but he’s never claimed responsibility for doing it. Besides, what would he want with that museum file?’

‘Dunno, Bill, I dunno. Do you still want him to investigate the intimidation rumours?’ Ervine asked.

‘Of course, he’ll be good at that. It may be we jest need to keep a closer eye on him, and as he will be working for us on the investigation, it gives us a good opportunity to do that.’
